EU Safety Standard for Automatic Doors Updated in 2026: Is Your Sliding Gate Opener Compliant?

If you are exporting automatic doors or gate openers to the European Union, there is an important update you should be aware of.
The harmonized safety standard for power-operated doors has been revised.
As of January 2026, the updated EN 12453:2025 standard ("Safety of power operated pedestrian doors") has officially taken effect. While products certified under the previous version remain acceptable during their existing certificate validity, buyers and specifiers are increasingly asking for proof of compliance with the latest requirements for new projects.
If you are unsure whether your current sliding gate opener or swing gate opener meets the new rules, this short guide may help you identify the key changes.
1. What Has Changed – Three Key Updates
Compared to the previous version, EN 12453:2025 introduces stricter requirements in three main areas:
Stricter impact force limits – The new standard lowers the permissible dynamic and static force on door edges, particularly to protect children and people with reduced mobility. This means the motor response speed and reversing sensitivity of older gate opener models may need recalibration.
Soft-start and soft-stop become mandatory – These features were recommended in the previous standard but are now required. If your gate opener causes the gate to start or stop with a sudden jerk or noticeable shaking, it is unlikely to pass compliance testing under the new rules.
Fail-safe operation of control units – In the event of a single fault in the control circuit, the gate or door must remain in a safe condition (for example, not closing unexpectedly and causing injury).
2. Practical Implications for Importers and Manufacturers
If you are an importer, distributor, or installer purchasing sliding gate openers or swing gate openers, we recommend paying attention to the following two points:
Request test reports based on the new standard – An old CE certificate may no longer be sufficient. Ask your supplier for EMC or LVD test reports based on EN 12453:2025.
Verify controller functionality – Check with the manufacturer whether the gate opener's control unit supports on-site adjustment of parameters such as soft-start, soft-stop, and reverse-on-obstacle. This is important for field commissioning.
3. How to Respond – Two Practical Suggestions
Adapting to regulatory updates does not have to be complicated. If you are currently using or planning to purchase our products, here are two suggestions:
For existing stock – If you have a large quantity of pre-2025 gate openers in your warehouse, contact your supplier to discuss a controller firmware upgrade or replacement to meet the new impact force requirements.
For new product selection – Prioritize gate openers marked as compliant with EN 12453:2025. Our MD series and PY series gate openers have already passed internal testing against the new standard and are suitable for most commercial applications.
Conclusion
Regulatory updates for EU standards are ultimately aimed at making automatic doors and gates safer. Understanding these changes early can help you avoid potential compliance issues in your future projects.
